Moldova is experiencing a similar situation, with the Council reporting a 35% reduction in this season's output due to extremely high temperatures during the spring and summer, which accelerated grape ripening and reduced water availability in the soil. As a result, Moldovan grapes will be harvested and become available in the markets earlier than usual.
Rising demand for organic seedless grapes in Europe
The global production of seedless grapes is on the rise, with Italy leading in both conventional and organic farming, particularly in regions like Puglia, Sicily, and Basilicata. Organic seedless grapes account for approximately 150,000 tonnes annually, with Puglia alone contributing 60% of Italy's production. As European demand grows by 5% to 7% each year, the market share for organic grapes has steadily increased, making up between 5% and 10% of retail sales. The popularity of these grapes is driven by their sweet taste, crunchy texture, and versatility, as well as the lower environmental impact of organic farming, which reduces CO2 emissions and water consumption.
