Weekly Updates on the B2B Kiwi Market

Expected Price Hikes

A few weeks prior to the beginning of the kiwi harvest season, the consensus among producers and B2B buyers holds that there will be price hikes, due to the production volumes drop in the main kiwi-producing countries relative to last year. This will continue the upward trend of Kiwi producer prices that has been going on for the last 5 years.

The "Moria" disease

Infected kiwi plants absorb water less efficiently, while an extensive drop of leaves and necrosis is observed. In extreme cases, the disease may cause plant death. Following the 2019/20 harvest campaign, the crop disease ‘moria’ caused Italian kiwi production to drop by over 100,000 metric tons, allowing Greek produce to dominate the European market.

Lower volumes

The largest European producers, Italy and Greece, faced mild winters and extreme weather phenomena in early summer and in the last 10 days, which severely damaged kiwi plants. That's also why New Zealand's harvest officially ended with lower volumes than last year.

This is the reason why mean prices for kiwi in the main wholesale markets in Germany have been higher for August than last year. The previous graph only refers to cal. 30/33 kiwis, with this year's produce being expected to be smaller in size.

To fight off these conditions, Wikifarmer offers its B2B customers exposure to a wide network of kiwi producers, mainly made of high-quality Greek producers. These have proven to be high-quality, cost-effective, and trustworthy resorts for international customers when the Kiwi market is in turbulence.

How you can optimize your Kiwi sourcing

To offer a glimpse of the insight drawn from discussions with our partners, Greek Hayward kiwi is expected to start selling on our platform at about 1.60 EUR/Kg, i.e. significantly lower than what we have witnessed to hold for kiwi sold as part of illicit re-branding practices of some key players in Italy and abroad (check our article here to learn more).

Annual Availability Calendar

According to kiwi producers on Wikifarmer and our team of agronomists, the above graph illustrates the annual kiwi production. The graph indicates that the production of kiwi fruit reaches its peak during the month of November and steadily decreases until the summer months when there is no production.
